Welcome to Maquoketa, a community of approximately 6000 people, located 30 miles south of Dubuque, IA, 35 miles north of the Quad Cities (Davenport, IA, Bettendorf, IA, Moline, IL, Rock Island, IL, and East Moline, IL), 50 miles east of Cedar Rapids, IA, and only three and a half hours west of Chicago! We are right in the middle of it all!
We feel that we are just the right size… we can offer students more opportunities than a very small rural district yet we are able to get to know our students individually and work with them on a more personal basis. We are a 3A district and have been recognized for academic, athletic, and fine arts accomplishments.
The Maquoketa School District serves about 1,333 students in our four buildings, which consist of two elementary buildings, one middle school, and one high school. After sixth grade, we also serve students from Sacred Heart Elementary School in Maquoketa and from Delwood Elementary – a neighboring district. We also serve ninth through twelfth-grade students from Andrew Community School District.
Our Schools

At Briggs Elementary, our teachers serve as models and leaders for our students from grades 3rd through 5th. Teachers collaborate every week so that we can better meet the needs of our diverse learners. While no two students are the same, all students deserve an engaging environment to explore science, global issues, and develop learning skills that will last a lifetime.

Maquoketa Middle School prides itself on the creation of ever-curious students. We serve students in grades 6-8. We use programs like our Free Reading Zone as a way to foster curiosity and love of reading among our students. We are dedicated to the positive Cardinal Culture with our school-wide “Be a CARD” program which promotes good behavior, sportsmanship, and a friendly atmosphere around the campus.

Maquoketa High School is a four-year high school with a current enrollment of approximately 620 students. Our high school has recently had two major construction projects completed. Phase I was completed spring of 2005 where we added 8 new classrooms including two new science classrooms and labs along with two modern art classrooms including a dark room. Phase II of the school improvements were completed in the fall of 2008, where a new entrance was added, in addition to new administrative offices and commons area. This phase of improvements also included a new state-of-the-art “pit style” competition gymnasium with a seating capacity exceeding 1650, a new state-of-the-art weight room, new wrestling room, training room, and locker room facilities.
Our faculty consists of 50 instructional staff members and two administrative personnel!
Here at Maquoketa High School, we promote Cardinal Culture through high expectations of our 9th - 12th graders. Students should not be expected to take the same path, and at MHS we want to prepare students for all challenges they may face in life whether that is earning a technical certificate in welding, a 4-year degree, or just paying taxes. Supporting our students comes first, and with over 150 course offerings and plenty of extracurricular and service organizations, students have the opportunity to develop the skills for the path they want to take.
